Breaking Stereotypes: Why More Women Are Becoming School Caretakers
At TIB Services, we believe in breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes, and creating opportunities for women to thrive in roles they may never have considered before. School caretaking is one of them.
For too long, site management and caretaking roles have been seen as ‘masculine’ jobs. But that perception is changing—thanks to the inspiring women stepping into these roles and proving that they’re just as capable, skilled, and valued in this field. We spoke to two of our female caretakers, Jan and Elizabeth, about their experiences in the job and why more women should consider it. Watch their video and read the blog below to hear some of their key insights.
A job that’s more than just fixing things
Beyond the hands-on work, school caretaking is about being part of a community. It’s about supporting schools, ensuring safe and welcoming environments, and being a trusted presence for staff and students. As a female caretaker, you’re not only keeping the school running smoothly—you’re also a role model for young girls, showing them that careers have no gender.
“I love to fix things and being around the children. They’re always really friendly with me and want to chat and ask me loads of questions. I really enjoy that interaction," explains Elizabeth.
Women are just as capable in caretaking work
Women bring essential skills to the role of a caretaker—practical problem-solving, organisation, and the ability to connect with students and staff alike. Our team is dedicated to matching caretakers, regardless of gender, with schools where they can truly make a difference.
Jan sums it up perfectly: “We’re just as capable of doing it as anybody else.”
Representation matters
For many children, particularly young girls, seeing a female caretaker or site manager is an important moment. It challenges long-held assumptions and inspires confidence that they can pursue any career they choose.
As Elizabeth shares: “I would recommend other women becoming a site manager or caretaker because females can do the role just as well as men. If you have those transferable skills, there’s no reason this role wouldn’t be perfect for you.”
Many of the women who join TIB Services also bring life experience and transferable skills from a wide range of industries, including the Armed Forces, engineering, trades, the emergency services and more.
Diversity goes beyond gender
At TIB Services, we know that diversity means more than just gender representation—it includes experience, age, and background. That’s why we are proud to be a Rest Less Age Inclusive Employer, supporting mature job seekers who bring a wealth of life and professional experience to their roles.
Our work with mature job seekers was recently recognised at the Recruiter Awards, where judges praised our commitment to helping individuals from diverse professional backgrounds find meaningful employment. We have also signed the Armed Forces Covenant and our commitment to helping the ex-forces community has recently been celebrated by the Soldiering On Awards.
