After a varied career spanning manufacturing, engineering, and a family construction business, Colin found himself searching for a new challenge in retirement.
With other commitments, including looking after grandchildren and enjoying outdoor hobbies, Colin wanted a role that offered the flexibility to balance work with his personal life. He came across an advert for TIB Services and was instantly drawn to the idea of becoming a school caretaker — a role he hadn't considered before.
Colin decided to sign up with TIB Services, and soon realised that school site management offered everything he was looking for — a chance to work in his local community and using his engineering skills in a meaningful way — while enjoying the flexibility to choose when and how much he worked.
“The flexible nature of the work is a big plus for me,” Colin explains. “It gives me the opportunity to work when it suits me. I’ve got other commitments with grandchildren and lots of hobbies [...] so it works really well.” The ability to offer additional hours when needed was also a great benefit, allowing him to be there for the school while maintaining his desired work-life balance.
One of the highlights of the role for Colin is the opportunity to contribute to the school environment in a meaningful way. As an engineer, he brings a wealth of technical skills to the table.
"An engineer [...] can bring to the school a whole range of skills," Colin notes, from problem-solving to handling electrical, drainage and fire alarm systems, adding real value to the school’s day-to-day operations.
Colin enjoys not only the practical aspects of the job but also the rewarding sense of helping the local community. Working with children and staff, Colin has found that being part of a school team allows him to make a difference and have a positive impact while keeping his days varied and fulfilling.
