Frank Highton has lived a life full of adventure. Based in Wigan for most of his life, aside from a three-year spell in Tenerife, Frank spent his career in the sports and fashion industry. His work took him across the globe and included over 30 trips to China to oversee footwear production.
After retiring in 2020, Frank initially filled his time with DIY projects and volunteering for local charities. However, once his jobs at home were finished, Frank found himself looking for a new way to stay active. "Being retired can sometimes be a little boring, but working with TIB and my volunteer commitments helps balance my days and weeks," he explains.
Frank discovered TIB Services while searching for rewarding work for retirees. What set TIB apart from general recruitment agencies was its status as the UK’s only specialist school site staffing provider. This focus appealed to Frank because it offered a structured, meaningful environment where he could apply his practical abilities.
Caretaking seemed the natural choice. Frank had picked up many skilled DIY techniques from his father and he already enjoyed working with children through his volunteer work. "I have found working with the TIB team straightforward. From day one, I was made to feel welcome and everyone you speak to is always helpful and friendly," Frank says.
Since joining the team, Frank has realised just how vital skilled caretakers are to the smooth running of schools. Whether he is keeping the grounds tidy or ensuring the building is safe and secure, Frank takes pride in the work that allows teachers to teach and pupils to learn.
One of Frank's most memorable moments came during his very first assignment. When the school's Father Christmas fell ill just before the school fair, Frank stepped into the role. The event was a total success and the school gave him a lovely card signed by the staff to thank him. Later, he helped a secondary school prepare for a high-profile visit where the feedback was excellent. "Knowing you are appreciated and that through your own efforts you are helping the school to run smoothly, really makes a difference," Frank notes.
For Frank, the biggest benefit of working with TIB Services is the ability to balance work with his personal commitments. Between his golden wedding anniversary, walking his two dogs, and his charity work, Frank needed a role that worked for him.
Frank finds the flexibility excellent as he can take assignments when it’s convenient for him. The job also keeps him very active both physically and mentally. "The job definitely keeps you active. Most days, you get your daily miles and steps in before lunch! Working as part of a site team, you get to make new friends and acquaintances, and you can often pick up new DIY skills," he says.
Frank’s advice to others considering the role is simple. "Give it a go. If you are fit and healthy, don’t let age be a factor. The TIB team are there to help. If you find it is not for you, then that is not an issue - at least you have given it a go!"
