Seeking meaningful, flexible work after retirement

After retiring from a long and successful career in the water industry, Andy was looking for something to keep him active, socially engaged, and flexible enough to fit around his lifestyle.

Having moved to a new area where he didn’t know many people, he wanted to take on a role that would allow him to meet new people while still enjoying the freedom of choosing his working hours. This led him to explore opportunities he had never considered before.

Joining TIB Services

Andy discovered TIB Services, the UK’s only specialist school site staffing service, offering flexible and rewarding roles in school caretaking.

This gave him the chance to take on local, community-based work, with the added benefit of choosing the days and times that worked around him, so it seemed perfect for his needs. Andy quickly realised that becoming a school caretaker would not only provide him with a fulfilling job, but also enable him to play an essential role in the smooth running of schools.

Finding purpose, social connection and flexibility

For Andy, one of the most rewarding aspects of being a school caretaker has been the opportunity to contribute to his local community in a meaningful way.

"The most rewarding thing is to be of use," Andy explains. “When somebody comes up and asks you to do a job, you just turn your hand to it and go and do it. It's a small job, but other people don't have the time or the skill to do it.” Additionally, the social aspect has been a key benefit. "The social aspect is really good," Andy says. "You get to meet all these people in the team and be able to help them."

The flexibility that comes with the role has also been crucial for Andy. As someone who values a good work-life balance, being able to pick and choose his shifts has given him control over his schedule. This flexibility was the initial attraction to the role, and after experiencing it, Andy found it so rewarding that he applied for a full-time position.
